Comic Book Artist #5

July 1999 Review by Michael McClelland    Author

Smarter than WIZARD! Less snooty than COMICS JOURNAL! Much friendlier than CBG--it's Comic Book Artist! The best magazine about comics on the stands--and they have no top 100 list of comics to prove it!

At least there is SOMETHING out there worth reading. What does it say that I'd rather read ABOUT comics than the comics themselves? I really hope this magazine cleans up at the Eisners this year, because it is everything I want from a publication about comics. No immature and/or stuffy editors telling me what they think about comics, but POV from the actual people who made the comics. Interviews with creators who count, about things that are worth reading. No "who can beat who" here. No "who is the most tightly puckered to the editor's ass" here. Just good reading. Now let's get some of these people working on comics and stop wasting the greatest asset comic books have--the experienced creators!

Take a gander at just some of the talent featured in this month's issue dedicated to DC Comics 1967-74: Alex Toth, Fred Hembeck, Mike W. Barr, John Broome, Joe Simon, Nick Cardy, Gil Kane, Neal Adams, Sergio Aragones, Dennis O'Neil, Steve Skeates, Marv Wolfman, Michael Kaluta, Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson.

Last issue featured a too often overlooked bastion of comics excellence: the Warren Magazines, CREEPY, EERIE, VAMPIRELLA, etc. Featured are pretty much the who's who of the SF/horror genre of comics. If they ain't talking they are being talked about.

Reading an issue can be a bit like Rashomon at times, with everyone remembering the same events in different ways. It's grand fun. Read this magazine and you will become a comics expert--guaranteed!

As usual, it takes me way more than a day to read a CBA. Heck, it takes more than a week! And then there is Roy Thomas' ALTER EGO on the flip side.

I can't praise this magazine enough. It is literally a dream come true for both the older fan who wants to know more about his favorite comics and creators and for the younger fan who wants to know period. So what are you waiting for? It's half the price of the latest Galactus food fight.
