Vertigo: Winter's Edge

Writers/Artists: Various
Editor: Shelly Roeberg

December 1997 Review by Michael McClelland    Author

This is a "Whitman Sampler" of Vertigo's titles just in time for Christmas. It is tied together with a House of Secrets theme by Steven T. Seagle and Teddy Kristiansen. Like most compilations it varies in quality and interest from story to story.

The primary attraction here is Vertigo golden boys Neil Gaiman and John Bolton, featured on a tale of the Endless from Sandman. This one features Desire and her Christmas gift to the last of the mythological Satyrs. It is good, but not good enough after nearly a two year Gaiman drought on the Endless.

The most solid story here is the debut of Nevada, a new series coming soon from Vertigo. It is written by Howard the Duck creator Steve Gerber with art by Phil Winslade and Steve Leialoha. It looks to be the dawn of a great series and if Gerber's history is anything to judge by it will be.

Nevada is the simple story of a Las Vegas dancer and her pet ostrich. And you bet I want to see how Gerber pulls off a great comic based on that premise.
