Boycott Austin Powers

And you thought Jar Jar was bad... Last week, this note from one of our most active contributors arrived in the Pop-Culture-Corn mailbag. Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Drop us a note. We're nothing if not responsive. We're currently attempting to contact Mr. Myers for his reaction to this urgent protest.

I am shocked and offended by the offensive and derogatory manner in which Scottish people are portrayed in the new big budget summer blockbuster Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. I was horrified to see the manner in which a Scotsman was portrayed for laughs in the lowest sort of bathroom comedy. The character in question, FAT BASTARD, combines all the worst and most harmful sterotypes of the proud Scottish people, including a ridiculous accent, obesity, a penchant for eating anything and a mean disposition. I can only begin to imagine the irreparable harm this popular summer film will have on persons of Scots descent. The worst part of it is that many children will see this film and accept this harmful stereotype as factual about the Scottish people. Worse, the sterotype extends beyond the Scottish to include all large red-headed people.

Mr. Myers is the worst sort of racist. He hides behind artistic liscense and misuses the first amendment to spread his message of hatred and derision. The blatant act of calling the character FAT BASTARD is sufficent enough to attack both fat people and the Scotch, implying that fat people are bastards and that Scotch people are overweight and cranky. Mr. Myers has in his portrayal of the character FAT BASTARD dredged up the worst and most offensive vaudeville sterotypes and racially-motivated humor from the past that many have worked so hard to put behind us as we move to more civilized and tolerant times.

I urge everyone who cares about equality, justice and humanity to boycott Mr. Myers' racially explotative film, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. We must send a message to film makers that this sort of low attack on a group of people based on race, religion and ethnic origin will no longer be tolerated by the public.
